Sclerotherapy Training
A one-day, hands-on course in microsclerotherapy for thread veins, spider veins and reticular veins, including how to assess varicose veins safely and when to refer to a vascular specialist.

What this course is about
Thread veins and spider veins are one of the most requested cosmetic leg treatments in the UK. Microsclerotherapy treats them with fine injections of a sclerosant that close the vein so the body can absorb it over the following weeks.
This course teaches safe, evidence-based cosmetic sclerotherapy for telangiectasia (thread and spider veins up to about 1 mm) and reticular feeder veins (up to about 3 mm). You will learn liquid and low-concentration foam techniques, how to choose sclerosant strength by vein size, and how to use compression properly.
Larger, symptomatic or bulging varicose veins need duplex ultrasound and specialist care. A key part of this course is learning to recognise them, screen for venous disease and refer patients correctly, in line with NICE guidance, so you only treat what is safe to treat in an aesthetic setting.
What you'll learn
- 01
Venous Anatomy & Pathophysiology
- Leg vein anatomy: Superficial and deep systems, perforators and how valve failure leads to reticular veins, telangiectasia and varicose veins.
- Classifying veins: Using the CEAP classification to tell cosmetic veins from veins that need specialist assessment.
- 02
Patient Assessment & Referral
- Consultation and screening: Medical history, DVT and clotting risk, pregnancy, medications, allergies and other contraindications.
- When to refer: Red flags such as bulging varicosities, skin changes, ulcers or symptoms that need duplex ultrasound and a vascular referral.
- 03
Sclerosants & Prescribing
- Sodium tetradecyl sulphate and polidocanol: How they work, choosing concentration by vein size, and liquid vs foam preparation.
- Legal and prescribing requirements: Sclerosants are prescription-only medicines. This covers face-to-face prescriber assessment, consent and record keeping.
- 04
Injection Technique & Compression
- Microsclerotherapy technique: Needle choice, vein cannulation, injection volumes and pressure, mapping and treating feeder veins first.
- Compression and aftercare: Compression stockings, walking advice and planning treatment sessions, practised on live models.
- 05
Complications & Outcomes
- Managing side effects: Bruising, hyperpigmentation, telangiectatic matting, trapped blood, ulceration and allergic reactions.
- Serious events: Recognising and escalating suspected DVT, intra-arterial injection and visual disturbance.
Is this course for you?
This course is for registered medical professionals: doctors, nurses, nurse prescribers, dentists and paramedics. Sclerosants are prescription-only medicines, so non-prescribers must work with an independent prescriber who assesses each patient face to face. Previous injectable experience is helpful but not required.
